Las Vegas Sands Bringing EuroVegas Casino Gambling To Madrid
As the rest of the gaming world prepares for the inevitable jump to online casinos, Sheldon Adelson and his Las Vegas Sands company is continuing to push the envelope in land-based casino expansion. Adelson and Sands finally chose a location for their long-anticipated move into Spain.
Madrid has been chosen as the Spanish city that will become home to EuroVegas, the latest project from LVS. The casino resort is expected to cost several billion dollars to build, and the capital of Spain seemed like the best place to spend that money, according to Adelson.
“The regional government of Madrid has been a strong advocate for this potential development,” said the Sands CEO. “And we are appreciative of the energy they have brought to this process.”
The decision was a tough one for Adelson, who had several cities vowing to become the gaming capital of Spain. Barcelona, which recently hosted the Olympics, was a strong suitor, and in the end Adelson had to go with his gut.
“Barcelona is an outstanding tourism destination, and choosing Madrid over Barcelona was not an easy selection.”
Adelson has been lobbying the Spanish government to bring a casino to the country. Now that Madrid has been chosen to be the host of the new facility, Adelson is turning his attention towards having some Spanish laws loosened for the casino. Most notably, Adelson is hoping the government will make an exception to the smoking laws, and allow smoking inside the casino resort.
This is not the first entry into a foreign market for the Las Vegas-based gaming company. Adelson invested billions of his own money into casino resorts in Macau at a time when the casino industry was struggling. Adelson’s risks paid off over the past couple of years, as Macau has become the top gaming destination in the world. Adelson believes that Spain has similar potential.
