Maryland Gambling and Online Casinos – State of the State
Maryland is relatively new to the casino gambling and poker industry. Maryland lawmakers broke down the gambling walls in 2007 when the state legislature passed a law permitting five casino licenses. That law had to be approved by voters per the Maryland Constitution, and an amendment was approved in 2008.
Although there are no specific laws that make online gambling illegal for residents, Maryland has taken some of the fiercest and most aggressive actions against what they deem ‘illegal operators’ of online gambling sites. They have led federal investigations and helped world renowned poker sites lose their acclaim after proving those companies accepted and transferred money disguised as payments for unrelated products or services.
Maryland has one of the most-respected treatment and prevention programs for problem gambling. Other Northeastern states have used the Maryland program while creating their own preventative programs.
