Prosecutors Continue Crackdown In Montana As Gaming Laws Change
Montana is not one of the most liberal states when it comes to gambling, and while dozens of states have begun to change their Internet laws, Montana has continued to crackdown on illegal sports betting. The latest indictment came down this past weekend when John Fischer was arrested and charged with running an illegal bookmaking operation.
Fischer is not thought by authorities to be the mastermind behind the operation. Instead, prosecutors believe that Fischer was a middle man between the gamblers and the offshore website that was allowing the sports betting.
The Montana state attorney charged Fischer with operating an illegal gambling enterprise. According to the indictment, Fischer gave customers passwords that allowed the gambler to access a website where odds on sporting events could be found. bets could also be placed on the site, with Fischer serving as the person responsible for collecting and paying the bettors.
This is not the first time that Fischer has been in trouble with the law. In 2003, he was convicted for operating an illegal sports book. The operation was run out of a card room in Billings, Montana.
Fischer admitted to authorities after his arrest this week that he was a middle man for the Internet betting business. No indication has been given that others will be arrested in the sting operation, but Fischer did plead not guilty to the charges in court on Monday.
