Iowa Gambling and Online Casinos – State of the State
When you think Iowa, you may picture corn or wheat fields in your brain – and gambling is certainly not a word that comes to mind. So it may come as a surprise to most USA gamers to know that Iowa actually has made quite a name for itself within the gambling industry over the past decade.
While most states are only now starting to get the feel for casinos, Iowa has been prospering from the tax revenue from gambling since 1991. That year, Iowa became the first state in the USA to offer riverboat casinos. It became a fad that spread to Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, and several other states.
The original idea was small stakes gambling, with $5 limits. That changed in 1994 when state lawmakers passed an amendment eliminating the betting limits. The change contributed to hundreds of millions in additional revenue for the state.
Since 1994, there have been several expansion efforts to the casino industry. Currently, the state is closing in on 20 regulated casinos.
